What does a static grounding receptacle do on an aircraft?
It connects the aircraft to the refuelling equipment before any fuel flows. US patent 4525014 (1985) sums up the issue: without a grounding connection between the aircraft and the refuelling equipment, an electrostatic charge builds up and can produce an arc capable of igniting the fuel.
